Rhythm and Blues artist, Usher, was born in 1978 with the name Usher Raymond IV, in Dallas Texas. His father, Usher Raymond III (of course), left the family when Usher was only one year old. So Usher grew up with his mother, half-brother, James Lackey, and his stepfather. In fact, most of his formative years were spent in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Usher joined his church choir in Chattanooga when he was nine years old, which kindled his love of singing and led his mother and grandmother to realize that he could sing. After joining a singing group, his family realized that singing could become a profession for him, and they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where more opportunities for singers were available. While in Atlanta, Usher attended North Springs High School.

Although he had cut an album and already generated the first album of Usher songs at the age of 11 with an R&B group called the NuBeginnings, Usher’s real break came when he competed on Star Search at the age of 13. He was spotted and signed with LaFace records.

I tried a free numerology reading the other day. I figured, “What the heck, why not see how close they can come.” In case you didn’t know, Numerology adherents believe that all things, people included, have an individual vibration level.  This vibration determines behaviour, personality traits and character. Numerology attempts to determine your vibration level using two basic bits of personal information: your birth date and your birth name. A numerologist will take these bits of information and put them through some mathematical formulas that determine your vibration level and corresponding personality traits.

In my numerology reading, some of the predicted personality traits were bang on, and some seemed a little off (by my perception, anyway). But who knows, maybe I’m not the best judge of my own character. Regardless, it was fast and fun to do and doing readings with your friends and family will be great entertainment. If you come from a small town and wonder whether you have any chance whatsoever of making it into the music business, take heart. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, Bob Dylan, a.k.a. Robert Allen Zimmerman, is a small town boy who made it big in the big city. In fact, he made it big worldwide.

Dylan, who was now in his 70s and has been a major musical influence for over five decades,  is a native of Hibbing, Minnesota, on the western shore of Lake Superior. He attended Hibbing High School, enrolled at the University of Minnesota and began his career in a coffee house a few blocks from University of Minnesota campus. At this point he became involved in the local Dinkytown folk music circuit.

Dylan left the University of Minnesota at the end of his first year, in 1960, and it was at this point that he traveled to New York City, hoping to meet and perform with Woody Guthrie, who had been his biggest musical influence. Once in New York City, he began to play at various clubs around Greenwich Village and it was here that his musical career took off. And when I think of Dylan, I think of him as a New York artist, performing in Greenwich Village. But as you can see, he was in fact, a small town Minnesota boy.
